Why people request one

A substance use assessment can be requested for many reasons. Some individuals are referred by another professional or agency, while others choose to complete an assessment because they have concerns about their own substance use and want to better understand whether treatment may be beneficial.

• Court or attorney referral
• Probation or other legal requirements
• Employer or workplace requirements
• Referral from a medical or mental health provider
• Concern from a family member or loved one
• Concerns about alcohol or drug use
• Determining whether treatment is needed and what level of care may be appropriate
• Documentation or recommendations requested by another agency

The assessment reviews substance use history, mental health, current functioning, strengths, risks, support systems, and other factors that may affect treatment needs. After the assessment is completed, the clinician will discuss the findings and recommendations with you. If treatment is recommended, we will explain the appropriate next step. If Connecting Bridges does not provide the service or level of care you need, we will assist with an appropriate referral. Turnaround time depends on the type of assessment and whether additional records or documentation must be obtained.

For individuals seeking only a specific assessment, including a DWI assessment or DOT/SAP evaluation, those services follow a separate assessment process and do not automatically mean that SACOT or SAIOP treatment is required.
